چکیده

The essential oil obtained in toto from Santolina insularis was investigated for its antiviral activity on herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) in vitro. The IC50 values, determined by plaque reduction assays, were 0.88 and 0.7 mg/ml for HSV-1 and HSV-2, respectively, while the CC50 determined by the MTT test on Vero cells was 112 mg/ml, indicating a CC50/IC50 ratio of 127 for HSV-1 and 160 for HSV-2. Results obtained by plaque reduction assays also indicated that the antiviral activity of S. insularis was principally due to direct virucidal effects. Antiviral activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2 was not observed in a post-attachment assay, and attachment assays indicated that virus adsorption was not inhibited. Up to 80% inhibition of HSV-1 was achieved at the concentration of 40 mg/ml by yield reduction assay. Furthermore, reduction of plaque formation assays also showed that S. insularis essential oil inhibits cell-to-cell transmission of both HSV-1 and HSV-2. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The antiviral activity of 2%,3%-dideoxycytidine (ddC) has been investigated in a mouse pneumonia model. Consolidation of lung, histopathological changes, DNA synthesis as well as levels of TNFa were assayed. In this in vivo model, the oral administration of ddC twice daily over 4 days, displayed an inhibitory effect. The drug significantly reduced histopathologic responses. Analysis indicated t...

Salvage therapy with ritonavir (RTV) and saquinavir (SQV) failed to achieve virological and immunological improvement in 24 HIV-infected patients who discontinued triple therapy with RTV or indinavir (IDV) because of failure or intolerance to treatment. Changes in the HIV-1 protease gene sequence were analyzed prospectively in 14 patients. No primary protease mutation was found prior to the use...

A soft computing approach for task contracting in multi-agent manufacturing control

This paper describes a new task-contracting schema for multi-agent manufacturing control based on soft computing. It aims to apply fuzzy techniques to implement a real-time multi-criteria task-contracting mechanism for part flow control in manufacturing floor. For comparison purposes, the paper also considers other recently proposed evolutionary strategies to adapt and optimize agents’ decision...

Background : We tested the in vitro activity of pleconaril and AG7088 against five numbered human rhinovirus (HRV) serotypes and 46 clinical HRV isolates of undefined serotype recovered from patients with common colds. Antiviral effect of pleconaril and AG7088 were assessed by cytophathic effect (CPE) inhibition assays in Ohio HeLaI cells using microscopic and spectrophotometric methods. Both c...
